Abstract: Erosion is the removal of solids (sediment, soil, rock and other
particles) in the natural environment. It usually occurs due to transport by wind,
water, or ice; by down-slope creep of soil and other material under the force of
gravity; or by living organisms, such as burrowing animals, in the case of
bioerosion. Erosion is a noticeable intrinsic natural process but in many places it
is increased by human land use. Poor land use practices include deforestation,
overgrazing, unmanaged construction activity and road-building. Land that is
used for the production of agricultural crops generally experiences a significant
greater rate of erosion than that of land under natural vegetation. The aim of this
research is to find out information and determine about the area sensitive to
erosion with tools geographic information system (GIS) approach in Kabupaten
Karo, Sumatra Utara. The methods used for analysis was geography information
system (GIS). The results showed a variety of area sensitive to erosion. Areas
with heavy soil erosion potential is 84,805.03 ha or 38%, and potential erosion
area is 62,525.14 ha or 29%. Based on these results, in general the Kabupaten
Karo has the high potential heavy erosion. The high potential heavy soil erosion
in the Kabupaten Karo has caused extent of agriculture and forest degraded
